The metal frame surrounding a commercial door opening is commonly called a door jamb or door frame assembly. In cold-storage applications, this includes standard frames, plug frames, and jamb sandwich frames with headers, all designed to secure the door panel and maintain an insulated seal against the wall opening.

A welded commercial door frame is a one-piece frame construction where the jamb and header components are permanently welded together for maximum rigidity and a seamless appearance. This differs from prehung or sandwich-style frames, which arrive pre-assembled but use fastened rather than welded joints for faster field installation.

A standard (jamb) frame is designed for new openings or full frame replacement, while a plug frame is built to retrofit older walk-in coolers or freezers where the opening was originally cut for a plug-style door. Plug frames install into the existing rough opening without modifying the surrounding wall panel.

Heated frames, or heated jambs, are recommended for freezer applications running at -20°F to -40°F or for high-cycle doorways where frost and ice buildup can cause the door to stick or freeze shut. The embedded heat wire keeps the frame surface above freezing to maintain a reliable seal.

Most prehung swing door frames install in about one hour since they drop into the existing wall panel opening without requiring panel replacement. Sliding door frames with jamb sandwich construction and headers typically take 2–4 hours due to the added track, trolley, and header assembly.
